Nose blowing technique
Prior to the total laryngectomy, to blow the nose, the air from the lungs was sent to the nose with a surge in pressure. After the surgery your patient could have a runny nose and not be able to control it because the air comes out through the orifice in the neck.
You can teach your patient to blow his/her nose with a specific technique. He/she must use the air present in the mouth making opening and closing jaw movements, while keeping the lips closed tight and propelling the air towards the nasal cavities.
